Hot Weather Driving Tips

When thermometers are hitting over a hundred degrees all overAmericaduring the dog days of summer, you might be concerned about constant warnings of heat stroke or dehydration.  However, did you know heat can do as much damage as extreme cold to your car? That’s why Toyota of Newnan wants to offer these Hot Weather Driving Tips.

1.  First, and probably most importantly is your battery!  You probably know that cold weather can cause a battery to fail, but did you know extreme heat can do the same damage?  If you haven’t checked your battery recently, take a peek under the hood and check for cracks or any corrosion on your battery.  Also make sure the battery is securely mounted because connections can rattle loose and leave you with a non-working car.

2. The coolant in your radiator plays an important role in keeping your engine from overheating, so in during the extremely hot days, coolant levels can run low and cause your engine to overheat.  Keep in mind, though, that you should not attempt to replace radiator coolant until the engine has thoroughly cooled down from driving, as overheated steam and fluid could be released, causing burns.

3.  Before you go for a drive, check the air level in your tires!  Low tire pressure can cause excessive friction and cause damage to your tires, leading to a flat over time.  The opposite can also be harmful as well.  Overinflated tires will expand with friction and heat, and could very easily blow out while driving.  So make sure your tires are at the correct pressure, and remember to have a spare ready, just in case!

4. Let’s not forget about an important asset: your air conditioning system!  When temperatures are in the hundreds, the last thing you want is a malfunctioning air conditioner.  If yours is broken, consider bringing it in to a certified technician at Toyota of Newnan and having it fixed, as excessive heat can cause dehydration and other heat related issues for you.  Plus, no one wants to be sweating in there car! Also, while you are having your air conditioning serviced, ask them to replace the cabin air filter if it hasn’t been replaced in the last 6 months.
Unfortunately, even the best plans go wrong.  In case of a breakdown, stock your car with some basic equipment to help you get unstuck.  Always keep a spare tire or patching kit, jumper cables, and beacons or flares in case of low visibility.  We hope that with these tips you can battle this heat and stay safe.  Have a great summer everyone!

The Best Ride For Man’s Best Friend

Are you and your family planning a road-trip with the company of your dog? Toyota of Newnan would like to know if you’ve planned on how to travel safely with Fido. Here are some travel tips to make your trip safe and comfortable for your cherished dog:

#1) Make sure you secure your dog properly. It is just as important to buckle up your pup as it is to buckle up your child. You can purchase a pet restraint for you vehicle at any pet large pet supply store.

#2) Take breaks often! I know that you are anxious to make it to your destination but it is important to give your dog enough breaks to stretch out, relieve itself and eat. It’s not a good idea to let your dog eat while the vehicle is in motion, as this will often upset its stomach. Keep water handy for your furry companion on the ride too!

#3) Dogs get bored too! Provide your pup with some entertainment for the ride. Bring a toy and any object that provides comfort to your dog. This will help prevent doggy boredom and/or anxiety.

#4) Pack a doggy travel kit. Include toys, dog treats, water, first aid materials and any medications needed. This will help ensure that you don’t forget anything important.

#5) Prepare your pet! If your puppy has any travel issues or anxiety, discuss with your vet ideas and remedies that may help ensure to keep Fido happy, calm and comfortable on your road-trip. Try practicing these  ideas on shorter rides prior to your trip to see which works best for you and your dog.

#6) Look into purchasing a dog ramp, as it is better for your pup’s legs and joints when entering and exiting a vehicle.

Another suggestion is to look into having a vehicle with dog-friendly features. Why not try a Toyota Sienna or its number one-ranked, dog friendly cousin since 09, the Toyota Venza? Fido Friendly magazine selected the Toyota Sienna as one of the best choices for a “Fido-Friendly” vehicle in 2011.  With it’s versatile interior and tri-zone climate control, this ride provides your furry friend with plenty of space and extra comfort. Check out Toyota of Newnan today to find pet-friendly vehicles for your family.

National Car Care Month

APRIL IS NATIONAL CAR CARE MONTH!

In honor of National Car Care Month, Toyota of Newnan would like to provide you with some tips on how to prepare your vehicle for Spring.

1.)  Clean Your vehicle thoroughly, inside and out. Powerwash the undercarriage, use engine cleaner and a hose for the engine, and hand wash the exterior with quality automobile soap. Vacuum the interior and use brand-name interior auto cleaners for other surfaces. Also, spray a fabric deodorizer to keep your vehicle smelling fresh. Windex the windows as well. Keep your vehicle looking in top-notch physical condition!

2.)  Check the battery connection for corrosion. Battery terminals can be cleaned with vinegar, and a toothbrush. A coat of dielectic grease will help keep the terminals clean as well.

3.)  Start the spring with new air filters and fresh fluids. Check your oil, antifreeze, and windshield wiper fluid and change if needed. Fresh Fluids and filters will improve your vehicles’s performance, and increase your fuel mileage. Remember to dispose of these fluids properly.

4.)  Examine the belts and hoses for soft spots and signs of cracking.

5.)  Change winter tires to summer tires, and inspect tires for uneven wear patterns  and sidewall damage. Change if needed.

6.)  Inspect your vehicle’s brakes, exhaust system, and suspension for any damage or wear-down.

7.)  Have your air-conditioning system serviced in order to be prepared for those hot temperatures!

If you are unable to perform the above tasks or notice any damage to your vehicle, take it to a good repair shop.  To provide better and more trustworthy service, check that the shop you are considering employs ASE-Certified Technicians and is a member of a trade association or AAA approved. Also see if the shop uses brand-name parts as they are better quality and usually include warranties. Test the shop’s integrity, competence, and reliability by starting with simple repairs and always get EVERYTHING IN WRITING.  Toyota of Newnan wishes you a safe Spring!

Relay For Life

The big day for Coweta County’s Relay For life is fast approaching, and we at Toyota of Newnan would like to present you with some information on the importance and purpose of this event, as well as ways how we, too, can help in the fight against cancer.

There were 1,529,560 American men and women who battled cancer in 2010. Approximately 569,490 of those Americans lost that battle. These statistics rank cancer the second leading cause of death in the United States, following heart disease. This silent killer holds no prejudices, affecting all ages, sexes and races.

Based on the American Cancer Society’s 2010 statistical report on cancer, the most common type of cancer diagnosed in the United States is lung or bronchial cancer, massing approximately 28 percent of cancer cases in 2010.

Breast cancer in women is the second most common cancer form. Combined with prostate cancer in men, these cancers account for about 25 percent of 2010 cancer cases. Colorectal cancer, or colon cancer, ranks as the third most common cancer, making up for approximately 9 percent of cases in 2010.

So how can we lower these statistics and prevent cancer in our own lives as well as in the lives of our loved ones? Here are five easy ways to help prevent cancer:

  1. Get to know your doctor. Be sure to receive your annual screening tests such as mammograms, colonoscopies, pap smears, etc., and ALWAYS FOLLOW UP. The best and most effective way to prevent cancer-related deaths is early detection.
  2. Avoid excess sun exposure. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, as well as the easiest to prevent. If you plan on spending a day out in the sun, be sure to lather on the sunscreen and wear a hat.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state that if you intend on being in the sun longer than 15 minutes, you should apply sunscreen.
  3. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. If your plate appears as colorful as a rainbow, you should be on track with this tip. Fruits and veggies contain powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants are super molecules that help protect against cellular damage such as cancer. The brighter and deeper the color of the fruits and vegetables you consume, the more antioxidant-packing power they contain. Yes, there is truth in that old phrase, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!”
  4. Exercise more. Why not? Not only does exercise help us keep in shape, but exercise helps strengthen our immune system. Try to average at least 30 minutes of exercise a day; whether it’s a brisk walk, bike ride, or even just raking leaves or going out dancing, can actually decrease a person’s cancer risk up to 50 percent.
  5. If you smoke, give it up. Smoking is ranked the leading potential risk factor associated with cancer. There are at least 60 chemicals in cigarettes linked to an increased cancer risk, as well as a plethora of other diseases and health problems. Your doctor can discuss other options suitable for your needs if you decide to quit smoking.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to saving lives. Its mission to find a cure for cancer can only be sustained through fundraisers such as community events like Relay for Life. The American Cancer Society also fights for the cause by helping lawmakers pass legislation to help raise awareness. It invests hundreds of millions of dollars every year, globally, to fight cancer, and has helped save millions of lives affected by cancer each year.

Dr. Gordy Klatt hosted the first Relay for Life in 1985, and has been the signature fundraising event of the American Cancer Society ever since. The experience has been described as “a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.” During the event,  teams of people camp out at a significant local locations such as a park or fairgrounds and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. The idea is to emphasize that cancer never sleeps. As such, relays take place overnight and last up to 24 hours. Each team has sponsors to help raise funds for the event, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

These special events make a difference in millions of people’s lives every year. You can help make a difference by participating in local events near you. Here in Newnan, Georgia, Toyota of Newnan is participating in Relay for Life at the Coweta County Fairgrounds April 29 at 7 p.m. through April 30 at 7 a.m.  Walt Gutierrez, owner of Toyota of Newnan, is this year’s Honorary Chairperson for Coweta County’s Relay for Life.  Walt’s team has made it their mission this year to raise more than $8,000. If you are interested in participating in the event as a team member or would like to make a donation, please contact Emily Mausser, team captain, at (770) 502-1333, or click here.
